INTRODUCTION
Dento Nihon Kobudo Jikan Kai is our amalgamated system of Japanese weaponry. It is very unique in that few traditional schools in the world cover such a wide variety of weapons. This includes legitimate samurai era swordsmaship (kory iai & kenjutsu) as well as Okinawan weaponry and other koryu weaponry including stick techniques.

The program is only available to members of our karate and jujutsu groups. It is large and highly structured, and is taught by our Japan-certified instructors.

Monthly intensive classes are supplemented by online distance learning tutorials to facilitate home study (see below). At senior ranks students may choose to specialise in one of these styles in our curriculum.

THE STYLES

Within our system we cover techniques of the following traditional styles in which our Chief Instructor has direct training and certification from legitimate Japanese organisations. These select schools all share similar principles that are in harmony with each other, thus making them compatible with our system;

1. Eishin Ryu Iaido (Iaijutsu)

英信流抜刀兵法

A 500 yr old sword drawing art. Techniques include drawing the blade from sitting and standing positions, sword duelling techniques, sword disarms and counter-disarms.

2. Shinkage Ryu Kenjutsu
神影流剱術

This stye of sword dueling is over 200 years old and involves training with the wooden sword, short sword (kodachi) and naginata.

3. Nihon kobudo weapon techniques
澁川一流柔術

We train in the weapons of Shibukawa Ichi Ryu jujutsu which include stick techniques of Asayama Ichiden Ryu and Namba Ippo Ryu and other weapons such as the sickle and chain (kusarigama), 6ft stick (rokushaku-bo), 4ft stick (han-bo), 3ft stick (sanshaku-bo), gobou and kobou (shorter sticks) and jutte.

4. Okinawan Kobudo - Taira Lineage

沖縄古武道
We practice the Okinawan kobudo taught alongside traditional Shito Ryu. The lineage is of the famous Okinawan master, Shinken Taira. Weapons include the sai, kama, tonfa, bo & nunchaku

WHY PRACTICE WEAPONS
These classes are an excellent supplement for people who practice other Japanese martial arts like karate, judo & aikido. They are also suitable for absolute beginners.

Training develops balance, coordination, timing, distancing, focus & mental alertness. Practitioners also learn how to use their centre of mass (tandem), correct breathing and posture to generate power, rather than using brute force.
